On Monday night’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart went after President Donald Trump for getting “nothing” out of his recent meeting with Xi Jinping, the president of the People’s Republic of China.
“But first, is everybody feeling good? Feeling safe? I know why. I know why you are feeling good. I know why you are feeling safe. Because daddy’s back home. Daddy’s back home,” Stewart said at the top of his monologue. “[Trump was] gone for a couple days in China, we were scared. ‘Where’s daddy? I’m so scared. Where is daddy?’ But now he’s home, and I’m sure he brought home all the goodies from China. Because as we all know, nobody — and I mean nobody — is tougher on ‘China’ rhymes with ‘Vagina’ — than Donald J. Trump.”
Stewart then cut to several clips of Trump taking a hard stance against China in the past, saying things like, “I’m the toughest person on China anywhere in the world,” and, “I stood up to China like no administration has ever done before.”
The late-night pundit then quipped, “Let’s see that famous toughness in action. Let ‘em have it!”
Stewart then played clips from Trump’s trip to China, in which the President was much kinder. In one soundbite, he told Xi, “You’re a great leader. I say it to everybody. You’re a great leader. Sometimes people don’t like me saying it, but I say it anyway because it’s true. I only say the truth.”
“That’s okay. A lot of ways to negotiate. Sometimes you get some more flies with honey,” Stewart joked. “So what did you get, Mr. President? Trade barrier down? Help with Iran? Some of them are delicious rare Earth metals?”
Stewart then cut to Trump’s interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier. When asked to reveal the most “significant, specific thing” he gained from the meeting, Trump said, “I think the most important thing is relationship. It’s all about relationship.”
“So, nothing,” Stewart said. “You got nothing! You flew to China… to personally confront our rival super power on the escalating trade and geopolitical tensions between us, and all you came back with was his Instagram? ‘The tariffs are in place, but we’re on the close friends story now. Well, he’s on mine.’”
