Hong Kong’s chief executive has met the business and innovation leaders advising him on the city’s strategic direction as part of drafting the first local five-year plan, with one adviser saying he was “inspired” by the high-powered group’s discussions.
Speaking after the string of lunch meetings held over the past three days, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said on Thursday that the members of his Council of Advisers were confident the city would continue to give “full play” to its roles as a “super value-adder” and a “superconnector”.
He also noted that among those taking part were new members Sun Piaoyang, chairman of China’s largest drug maker, Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals, and Xu Tao, CEO of StarFive Semiconductor Technology.
“Faced with a competitive external environment and accelerating technological transformations, Hong Kong must adopt a long-term perspective and formulate more systematic strategies for key development areas,” Lee said.
Lee established the council in 2023 in the wake of the pandemic, seeking to tap business leaders’ insights on the broader goals for Hong Kong’s development.
The latest discussions focused on three major themes: economic advancement and sustainability; innovation and entrepreneurship; and regional and global collaboration.
