One of this year’s star-studded Netflix movies has officially arrived today. Following its theatrical release on June 12, the streamer’s latest drama film, In the Hand of Dante, is now available to stream.
What do we know about Netflix’s In the Hand of Dante movie?
In the Hand of Dante was based on Nick Tosches’ 2002 novel of the same name. It was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Julian Schnabel, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Louise Kugelberg. In the 2026 film, Jason Momoa plays a brutal mob fixer named Rosario, who was tasked with tracking down the original manuscript of Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy.
The movie also stars Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, John Malkovich, Louis Cancelmi, Sabrina Impacciatore, Franco Nero, Benjamin Clementine, Paolo Bonacelli, Martin Scorsese, and Al Pacino. Some of the cast members are playing two characters: one from the modern-day timeline and one from the historical timeline. Scorsese plays the supporting role of Dante’s mentor, serving as the award-winning director’s first major acting credit in a long while.
“The film follows the parallel lives of a New York author in the 21st century who embarks on a violent journey after a mafia boss recruits him to steal Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy written in the poet’s own hand, and Dante in the 14th century seeking inspiration to write his most important work – each man unknowingly connected through time and their obsessive quest for love, beauty, and the divine,” reads the official synopsis.
In addition, In the Hand of Dante was also executive-produced by Scorsese and Isaac. Producers were Jon Kilik, Francesco Melzi d’Eril, Olmo Schnabel, Gabriele Bebe Moratti, Vito Schnabel, and Schnabel. Following its world premiere at last year’s Venice International Film Festival, the movie received a 43% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 21 reviews.
