Japan Beats Hong Kong, Vietnam, China and more as the Philippines outbound tourism powerhouse reshapes global travel rankings, with Asia leading the next major tourism wave. Japan has taken the top spot among Filipino travellers due to its cultural appeal, strong connectivity and diverse experiences, while Vietnam and China gain momentum through affordable travel options and expanding flight networks. The shift comes as around 4.16 million Filipinos travelled overseas in the first half of 2026, recording 9.45 percent growth, despite rising airfares and global uncertainties.
The increase demonstrates the strength of Filipino demand for international journeys, including leisure trips, family holidays, business travel and overseas visits. However, the market is no longer following the same patterns seen before. Travellers are becoming increasingly focused on affordability, flight availability and destinations that offer greater experiences without significantly increasing costs.
The shift has created new winners across Asia, with Japan strengthening its position as the favourite destination while Vietnam and China emerge as some of the fastest-growing markets among Filipino travellers.
Japan Becomes Filipino Travellers Favourite Destination After Surpassing Hong Kong
Japan has become the number one international destination for Filipino travellers in the first half of 2026, ending Hong Kong’s long-standing position as the leading overseas market.
The number of Filipinos travelling to Japan reached approximately 482,374, representing an 11.07 percent year-on-year increase.
The destination’s growth has been driven by its combination of cultural attractions, modern cities, culinary experiences, shopping opportunities and family-friendly tourism options. Japan continues attracting repeat visitors who return to explore different regions beyond the major gateways.

While Tokyo remains a popular choice, Filipino travellers are increasingly discovering destinations such as Osaka, Kyoto, Hokkaido and other regional areas known for natural beauty, traditional culture and seasonal attractions.
Strong transport systems, high safety standards and improved airline connectivity have also contributed to Japan’s rising popularity. Easier access and competitive travel packages have encouraged more Filipino travellers to include Japan in their international holiday plans.
Hong Kong remained extremely popular, recording around 480,990 Filipino visitors during the same period. However, a marginal decline of 0.93 percent allowed Japan to move into first place.
The narrow difference between the two destinations highlights the continued importance of Asian travel markets for Filipino tourists.
Affordable Asian Destinations Gain Ground as Travel Priorities Change
The biggest story in Philippine outbound tourism during 2026 is not only Japan’s success but also the rapid rise of destinations offering better value.
Vietnam recorded one of the strongest increases among all overseas destinations, with Filipino arrivals climbing by 77.21 percent to 301,455 travellers.

Vietnam’s growth has been supported by its affordable travel experience, attractive landscapes, diverse cuisine and expanding tourism infrastructure. Filipino visitors are increasingly exploring the country’s historic cities, coastal destinations and cultural attractions.
Destinations such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang are benefiting from growing interest among travellers searching for international experiences at reasonable prices.
China also recorded a significant recovery in the Filipino travel market. Visitor numbers increased by around 55.3 percent to 165,128 travellers during the first half of 2026.
Improved aviation links have played an important role in China’s resurgence. More flight options connecting Manila with major Chinese cities have made travel more accessible and encouraged Filipinos to explore new destinations.
Cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Shenzhen have gained greater visibility among Filipino tourists as travel connections continue improving.
The growth of Vietnam and China reflects a broader consumer trend. Filipino travellers are still eager to travel internationally, but they are carefully selecting destinations that provide stronger value.

Rising Costs and Regional Tensions Affect Middle East Travel Demand
Not all international markets experienced growth during the first half of 2026. Several Middle Eastern destinations recorded declines as rising costs and regional uncertainty influenced travel decisions.
The Middle East remains an important region for Filipino mobility due to employment opportunities, family connections and international flight networks. However, higher aviation fuel prices contributed to increased ticket costs and affected passenger demand.
The United Arab Emirates recorded a decline of 17.23 percent, welcoming approximately 203,609 Filipino travellers.
Qatar saw Filipino arrivals decrease by 14.08 percent, while Kuwait experienced the sharpest reduction, declining by 52.88 percent.
Saudi Arabia recorded a smaller decrease of 1.45 percent, receiving approximately 219,096 Filipino visitors.
The decline shows how external factors, including geopolitical developments and airfare changes, can quickly influence international travel patterns.

Filipino Travel Demand Remains Strong Despite Slower Second Quarter Growth
Although outbound travel increased overall, the pace of growth slowed after a strong start to 2026.
March recorded the highest annual growth rate, with Filipino overseas travel increasing by 18.5 percent year on year.
April also showed strong performance with approximately 13 percent growth, but momentum weakened during May when growth slowed to 3.34 percent.
By June, outbound travel recorded a 2.06 percent decline, reaching around 658,409 travellers.
The slowdown was linked to several factors, including higher airfares, increased travel expenses and the return of students to school after the holiday season.
However, the figures indicate that Filipinos were not abandoning international travel. Instead, they were adjusting their plans by selecting more affordable destinations and carefully managing travel budgets.

Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand Strengthen Their Appeal
Beyond Japan, Vietnam and China, several Asian destinations continued attracting Filipino travellers.
Taiwan recorded strong growth, with approximately 366,176 Filipino visitors, an increase of 28.86 percent.
Its popularity has grown through food tourism, shopping experiences, cultural attractions and easy accessibility from the Philippines.
South Korea also experienced impressive growth, with Filipino arrivals increasing by 53.22 percent to 185,637 travellers.
The continued influence of Korean entertainment, cuisine and lifestyle trends has strengthened interest among Filipino tourists.
Thailand remained a reliable favourite, welcoming around 264,238 Filipino travellers, representing growth of 5.63 percent.

Singapore continued ranking among the top destinations but experienced a slight decline of 4.87 percent, receiving approximately 352,171 Filipino visitors.
United States and Australia Maintain Strong Filipino Visitor Demand
While short-haul destinations dominated growth, long-distance markets continued attracting Filipino travellers.
The United States welcomed around 187,885 Filipino visitors, recording a 3.04 percent increase.
Australia also performed strongly, with Filipino arrivals reaching approximately 113,714, an increase of 21.87 percent.
These markets continue benefiting from family connections, education travel, business activities and established Filipino communities.
Filipino Outbound Tourism Moves Towards Smarter Travel Choices
The first half of 2026 confirms that Philippine outbound tourism remains one of Asia’s most active travel markets.

The biggest change is not a decline in international travel but a shift in traveller behaviour. Filipinos are becoming more selective, searching for destinations that combine affordability, convenience and memorable experiences.
Japan’s rise to the top position, Vietnam’s rapid expansion and China’s renewed growth demonstrate the changing landscape of Filipino travel preferences.
As the year progresses, destinations offering competitive prices, stronger airline connectivity and diverse experiences are likely to benefit the most.
Filipino travellers continue to show a strong desire to explore the world. However, in 2026, they are travelling differently — choosing smarter routes, better-value destinations and experiences that deliver more from every journey.
