Apple is adding a new way for developers to help users move their data and settings from an existing app to a replacement app with iOS 27.2.
The feature is designed for situations where one app is being replaced by another, allowing developers to designate a successor and provide a more seamless path for users moving across rather than forcing them to start again.
According to 9to5Mac, developers will be able to offer a transfer of supported app data and settings from the original app to its designated replacement beginning with iOS 27.2.
The change could be particularly useful when developers retire an older app in favor of a newly built version, or when a service moves users to a separate replacement app. Until now, switching between two separate apps could mean losing preferences or requiring users to set up the new app manually.
Apple is giving developers control over whether they support the migration process, meaning the experience will depend on individual apps rather than being available universally across iOS.
The feature forms part of iOS 27.2, which is currently in developer beta testing following the public release of iOS 27.
Apple released the first iOS 27.2 developer beta this week, with the update also introducing a redesigned Health app, additional Siri AI language support and several other changes currently being tested ahead of a future public release.
