With the final regular season matchday of the Championship season on Saturday, May 2, Wrexham is fighting to keep its promotion hopes alive.
Actors Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds purchased Wrexham in late 2020, and since then the team has gained worldwide notoriety through the FX series “Welcome to Wrexham.”
Wrexham has been on an incredible upward trajectory that started in the fifth-tier National League. An eye-popping fourth straight promotion is still possible for the Red Dragons.
After suffering a 3-1 defeat to league champion Coventry City, the Red Dragons are competing with Hull City and Derby County for sixth place.
Wrexham enters the final day of the season in the final playoff spot with 70 points accumulated in 45 matches. Hull is in seventh also on 70 points, but is down one on goal difference, while Derby sits in eighth with 69 points.
Wrexham schedule
Wrexham has the opportunity to clinch a playoff spot in front of the home faithful at Racecourse Ground on Saturday. The Welsh side welcomes fourth-place Middlesbrough, which is hoping to claim the final automatic promotion spot.
Hull, meanwhile, will face ninth-place Norwich City, while Derby County will face 15th-place Sheffield United.
If Wrexham betters Hull’s result and betters or matches Derby’s result, it will claim sixth place in the Championship table.
On the other hand, if the Red Dragons match Hull’s result, goal difference plays a factor. If goal difference is level, then goals scored will be the deciding factor. Currently, Hull has scored 68 goals to Wrexham’s 67.
All 12 Championship matches on Saturday, May 2, will be played simultaneously (7:30 a.m. ET).
When are the promotion playoffs?
The top two finishers at the end of the season will earn automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Wrexham has no chance of finishing inside the top two, so any potential promotion would have to come through the playoffs.
The teams that finish in third, fourth, fifth and sixth place will go into a playoff. After two semifinals and one final, one more club will earn promotion.
The four-team playoffs will see the semifinals played over two legs, on Friday, May 8 and Monday, May 11.
The two semifinal winners will advance to the playoff final at Wembley Stadium on May 23.
