Not even the most positive of Mexico fans could have envisioned such a picture-perfect start for the national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Czechia closed out a perfect group stage for El Tri: 9 points won out of 9 and 0 goals conceded.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of Mexico’s third win of the tournament has nothing to do with the team’s success. Arguably the most important player on their team, due to how crucial he’s likely to be in the future, got his first World Cup start against Czechia. Gilberto Mora, the 17-year-old attacking midfielder who plays for Tijuana, played 72 minutes and created two scoring chances.
Mexican prodigy Gilberto Mora gets back on the field and excites fans
While it wasn’t an outstanding performance, Mora’s immense talent was on full display. Top European clubs already had an eye on him, but one giant in particular has taken even more of a liking to him following his World Cup start.
Manchester United begin aggressive pursuit of Gilberto Mora
According to a report from Graeme Bailey, which comes just a day after the Mexico-Czechia game, Manchester United “have arguably been the most aggressive of the Premier League clubs” in pursuing Mora. They seem to have competition from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.
Obviously, it’s not just Premier League teams interested in signing the Mexican. Spanish giants Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also very intrigued by him. There’s sure to be a bidding war sooner rather than later.
