Germany’s Deniz Undav has had to bide his time to get into the Germany squad, despite a phenomenal year with VfB Stuttgart, among a strange row with Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann. Still, he started tonight’s friendly against Finland and duly rewarded with three goal contributions, netting twice himself and setting up Florian Wirtz’s goal. Undav’s luck seemed to turn for the worse when he went down due to injury and could not continue the match, but he did not seem worried about the injury. When discussing it after the match, he described it as quite minor:
“I felt a bit of pain but it’s nothing bad,” the former Brighton & Hove Albion player assured (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “A few days of treatment and it should be fine.”
Undav repeated his assurances that he was fine when asked by reporter Kerry Hau and even threw in a dry quip: “Everything’s fine. My butt cheek just hurts.”
Germany will contest one more friendly before the World Cup, against hosts USA, and Undav will hope his butt cheek is pain free enough to play in that match, as well. Perhaps, if he impresses again, he will have finally done enough to start the opening World Cup match.
