Paris Saint-Germain became the first club since Real Madrid to win back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles after defeating Premier League champion Arsenal in a thrilling final that went into penalties.
But it was how Arsenal lost in penalties that had fans in disbelief.
While three players did convert on their attempts from the spot, Eberechi Eze and Gabriel both missed the target completely. Gabriel — who was arguably Arsenal’s best player on Saturday in Budapest — stepped to the spot with a chance to extend the penalties into sudden death.
Instead, the nerves got the better of the Brazilian, and he skied his penalty five rows deep to lose the match.
No player wants to miss a penalty, but it only gets worse by missing the target. You have to at least get the shot on frame, and if the goalkeeper guesses right, you can live with that.
Predictably, fans turned the wild miss into a meme.
