Americans love to drink coffee, with 66% of the country downing at least a cup of coffee daily, according to the National Coffee Association. That’s a lot of coffee.
But while Americans may agree that coffee is their beverage of choice, there is quite a variety when it comes to the types of coffee each person prefers. This can be a difficult decision to make, considering the variety of options ranging from lattes to mochas to espressos that can be served hot or cold. And of course, there’s always the simple cup of black coffee, which some people prefer over anything with extra milk, creamers, or flavors added in.
States vary when it comes to which version of a cup of coffee residents prefer, so Coffeeness used Google search data to determine how inhabitants of each state appear to enjoy their coffee beverages.
The most commonly searched coffee drink in the U.S. may not be a surprise, but there is still plenty of variety among states—and only one whose inhabitants showed more interest in black coffee than any other kind. Check out the data on the map below, then read on to learn more about the results.
Espresso
Espresso was the most searched-for kind of coffee in the most states, with 25 states choosing it over any other coffee drink. Coffeeness found that this coffee option—which is great for a quick caffeine kick—was the most commonly searched type of coffee in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia, South Carolina, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maine.
Cappuccino
Cappuccinos give coffee drinkers an option if they don’t want something as direct as an espresso. Instead, a cappuccino gives equal treatment to espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam to become a drink that’s one-third coffee, one-third milk, one-third foam, and 100% delicious for coffee drinkers in some states. It’s also the favored coffee drink in Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Latte
Like cappuccinos, lattes combine milk and espresso for a tasty coffee drink, but a latte relies more on milk and has only a single shot of espresso to add some coffee flavor. In fact, the Italian words “caffè latte” translate to “coffee milk” in English. No state west of the Mississippi River favored this coffee drink, leaving this one to Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, and Massachusetts.
The one and onlys
Three states flew solo when it came to the type of coffee drink they prefer over any other.
Nevada was the only state to solely favor the affogato, which is a shot of espresso poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It seems like the perfect dessert drink to try before heading out on a night in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, the café au lait has French origins, making it a natural option for Louisiana-based coffee drinkers. And finally, Georgia was the only state that seemed to prefer a perfect cup of black coffee over any other coffee drink.
The states who couldn’t pick just one
Some states searched extensively for more than one type of coffee, so perhaps it’s better to let them order two coffees to make sure they get what they want.
Hawaii seemed to like espresso on its own, or over a scoop of vanilla ice cream for its other favorite coffee drink, the affogato. Californians couldn’t seem to decide between espressos and cappuccinos. Minnesota appeared to enjoy both espressos and lattes, while Connecticut couldn’t decide among cappuccinos, affogatos, and lattes, so it picked all three. Finally, three states—North Dakota, Nebraska, and Alabama—chose both cappuccinos and lattes as their favorite coffee drinks.
