Enzo Fernandez has been told he has taken Manchester City from possible Premier League challengers to definite contenders. City spent an eye-watering sum revamping their midfield during the summer, with Fernandez’s British record-equalling £125m move from Chelsea completing their business on deadline day.
The Argentine won the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League during his time in London and he has already made an immediate impact at the Etihad. And former City defender Danny Mills, speaking via BestBettingBonuses.co.uk, believes the transfer was a game changer for his old club and has called on people to stop going on about the fee.
“I think the Enzo Fernandez signing was really, really important,” he said. “(Ayyoub) Bouaddi is a very, very good player, very talented, but he’s very, very young.
“And it’s difficult to go through a full season if it was just him and (Elliot) Anderson in there. You’d be thinking, can they survive the whole season? Is there enough creativity in that midfield?

“Suddenly you throw Enzo Fernandez into that, and you’ve got the likes of (Mateo) Kovacic, incredibly experienced, to drop in and out as well. Suddenly you’re going, well, actually, this is now. And this is why I said the Enzo Fernandez signing is a game-changer for City.
“Forget about the fee – the quality and depth that he adds to that midfield takes them from possible challengers to definite challengers.”
City have made an impressive start to the campaign, winning six successive matches in all competitions since a 3-0 defeat to reigning Premier League champions Arsenal in the Community Shield.
However, one area of concern for Maresca is that his striking department relies heavily on the prolific Erling Haaland, who has scored six times already so far this season.
And while Mills, who made 53 appearances for City, accepts the Norway international is vital to his old club’s aspirations this season, he does believe they will have a plan in his place if anything happens to him.
“Yes, of course he’s vital,” he said. “You take him out of the team, you lose 30 goals, 40 goals, 50 goals maybe, whatever it might be.
“So if you did lose him, you’ve got to try and replace that, which is difficult. But he’s fit, he’s strong, he’s robust. We’ve seen this time and time again.
“He’s scored an obscene amount of goals already this season. So if something did happen, I’m sure there would be a plan, and I’m sure in January they would go again if needed.”
