LYON TWP. — The slogan of the largest coffee and donuts franchise in the United States is “America runs on Dunkin'”.
Now Dunkin’ hopes that Lyon Township does, too.
The chain, which was known as Dunkin’ Donuts until shortening the name in 2019 and serves coffee and doughnuts at about 10,000 stores across the country, is applying to put its next location at 22990 Pontiac Trail.
A preliminary site plan and special land use request are set to be on the Feb. 9 planning commission agenda, confirmed Shannon Kennedy, project architectural designer for J. Scott Architects of Farmington.”Around June, (Dunkin’) started looking into the site,” Kennedy said. “We removed all the existing interior walls. There is no construction yet, we’re at the very front end of the project. They don’t typically take too long after we get approvals. It should only take a few months, (opening) would be this year.”Kennedy doesn’t expect any issues getting approval from the planning commission and township board for the project. A special land use is required for the drive-thru, despite the existence of one at the site, which was an urgent care and before that, a bank. The 2,042 square-foot building, at the corner of Pontiac Trail and Marjorie Ann, sits on just over half an acre.
