Marvel Studios has remained tight-lipped about Avengers: Doomsday, revealing very little about what fans can expect from the upcoming MCU film. In a recent development, one of the film’s directors has shared a fresh update suggesting the studios may be heading in a completely new direction.
Avengers: Doomsday could push the MCU into uncharted territory
Joe Russo, who directs the film alongside his brother Anthony, spoke about Doomsday during a recent interview with Soundsphere. Russo said he and Robert Downey Jr. have been discussing the idea of returning to “phase zero,” describing it as a fresh start for the MCU rather than a continuation of previous storylines.
The director said, “So get ready for it. We want to make sure everybody feels like we’re not leaning on anything from the past. This is going to be, you’ll see when you see the movie, a complete new direction.”
Russo brothers have a strong track record in the MCU. The duo previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Joe explained that these four movies completed the arcs of characters like Captain America and Iron Man. He added that they were left with an empty story to continue until screenwriter Steve McFeely pitched an idea that gave Doomsday a foundation.
Further, Downey‘s involvement adds another layer as he returns to the franchise as Doctor Doom rather than his iconic Iron Man. Joe recalled, “We said, crazy idea, what if he’s the villain and he’s a gambler,” adding that the actor’s response was simply that he liked where it was going.
Marvel Studios has kept most of the details locked down. Avengers: Doomsday will bring heroes from three universes together against an existential threat unlike anything they’ve faced before. The Russo brothers haven’t explained what phase zero actually means, leaving fans in the dark and speculating about Marvel’s next chapter. Meanwhile, the return of Robert Downey Jr. has only increased the excitement around the project.
For now, fans will have to wait until Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters this December. The film will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which is currently scheduled for release in December 2027.
