Can Bayern Munich’s goalkeepers relieve Julian Nagelsmann’s distress?

Former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann is in a fix after a fresh injury to an important player. Germany’s senior goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been ruled out for the next few months with a hamstring injury. With the FIFA World Cup barely a few months away, it is highly unlikely that Ter Stegen would be fully available for the tournament with the highest stakes in the game. Understandably, the coach Nagelsmann is upset over the unfortunate turn of events in a World Cup year.

Complete support from the coach despite the bitter twist of fate

Reacting to Ter Stegen’s injury (SID as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Julian Nagelsmann said, “This is incredibly bitter. Ter Stegen had just returned and was on a really good path; we were very much looking forward to his return to the national team.”

However, being the talented man manager he is, Nags focused on providing what’s best for Ter Stegen in the immediate future — total support. “Right now, the only thing that matters is getting healthy, in calm and without pressure. We all stand behind him. Now we have to continue to do without him. But for Marc personally, this setback is of course much harder,” said Nagelsmann backing his goalkeeper.

The problem with the backups

Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann is the most likely replacement for Ter Stegen considering his experience at the highest level of German football. Meanwhile, backups in Noah Atubolu (SC Freiburg) , Finn Dahmen (FC Augsburg) and Alexander Nübel (VfB Stuttgart) are available to take charge of the German goalpost. It is to be noted that the total combined appearances of the above players for the German team at the senior level is 8. Having said that, Baumann and Nubel have racked up several hundred apps at the club level offering much required high level experience.

While the backup squad is undoubtedly talented, experience is where they do not come close to the senior players. Ter Stegen and Neuer have a plethora of experience in the Champions League and for Germany. So, going to the World Cup with mostly untested goalkeepers is a huge risk. Many World Cups have seen scintillating performances from goalkeepers who have changed the course of games and brought their teams victories and glory. Talent is an incredible thing, but experience matters!

Should Baumann undergo even a small injury, then the Germans would be heading into the World Cup with only Nübel as a surefire starter. Therefore it would only be natural that Nags is probably weighing the option to make a call to Munich.

Two potential trump cards from Munich

The legendary Manuel Neuer has been solid as ever despite turning 40 in March. Jonas Urbig was has been thrown into the mix occasionally by Bayern trainer Vincent Kompany has also proved to be a reliable option. Having said that, Urbig is also a fairly inexperienced keeper and his addition does not really fill the vacuum left by Ter Stegen.

Neuer hung his German boots up back in the summer of 2024, however he hasn’t slowed down since then to be fair to him. Yes, he is not the Neuer of 2014, but he has maintained himself very well and is expected to continue another season with Bayern Munich. So, an emergency call to Neuer is perhaps the most effective option for the situation.

Two more wildcard options

Two other German keepers with a lot of experience are Bernd Leno and Kevin Trapp. The duo have experience across Europe in the top leagues, having played for Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain respectively. However, the duo are past the heights of their abilities and have moved on to Fulham and Paris FC respectively.

With these factors weighing in on a World Cup year, Nagelsmann is rightly distraught in attending to this problem in a key position where Germany has a lot of young options that is still not ready to fill the gigantic shoes left by Neuer.

Neuer, a modern legend of the sport had been the mainstay for so long with no challenger that, there is a huge gulf left in his wake despite nearly two years since his retirement. Should Nags stick to his backups or is it time to make a call, and if it is, whose number should he dial first ? Let us know your take in the comments.
