Blood Bikes Wales saves NHS money with courier service

Blood Bikes Wales, which serves health boards across the country including the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, was praised during a meeting in Cwmbran with Torfaen MP Nick Thomas-Symonds.

Mr Thomas-Symonds said: “I was delighted to meet with volunteers from Blood Bikes Wales to hear more about the work they do to support our NHS – not just here in Gwent but across the entirety of Wales.

“Blood Bikes Wales are a fully voluntary service and work with the NHS to deliver critical services for patients, and also saves the NHS transportation costs.

“They are a vital support for our emergency services, and it was great to be able to thank them for all that they do.”

Founded in February 2011, the charity operates a free motorcycle courier service delivering blood samples, plasma, donated human milk, documents, and more.

The organisation runs weekday services in some areas and operates across Wales from 7pm on Friday evening until midnight on Monday morning, including bank holidays and Christmas Day.

Andy Green of Blood Bikes Wales said: “It was a pleasure to meet Nick and to be able to explain how and why we volunteer for Blood Bikes Wales.

“We volunteer to give something back to the NHS. All our members give their time 100% free.

“It’s not just about motorcycles, it’s about giving something back and supporting the NHS.”

Mr Green said that Blood Bikes Wales is “always” looking for volunteers.
