We all know the drill: explore the bustling city and hit up all the theme parks. But what if we told you that there are more neighbourhoods worth exploring with kids? We’ve found some great hidden gems, each with its unique charm, with unexpected finds that might just end up being the highlight of your trip.
1. West Kowloon: Museum-hopping & Art Park
If Singapore’s museums are part of your frequent haunts with the kids, then you’ll want to bookmark West Kowloon Cultural District for a day of laid-back exploration. There are some great museums in the area, including the must-visit M+ museum that’s known for its contemporary exhibits. The Hong Kong Palace Museum is also worthy of a visit, where you can take a deep dive into the country’s rich history and check out artefacts from the Forbidden City. They also feature immersive exhibitions that are a real hit with families!
After your visit, make your way to Art Park, where colourful food trucks serving up local and international favourites await. The big space is also perfect for a picnic, or simply letting the kids run free and burn off some energy while you enjoy amazing views of the harbour.
Since you’re in Kowloon, head over to Sham Shui Po, which houses the famous Toy Street (Pei Ho Street). The Golden Computer Centre is well known for retro toys, gadgets, and gaming gear. For a dose of culture, the Ex‑Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir and Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum provide off‑the‑beaten‑path glimpses into Hong Kong’s colonial history.

2. Hong Kong Island: Lesser-known art & culture experiences
To truly explore the hidden gems, Hong Kong Island is a neighbourhood cluster we’d highly recommend exploring. In Sai Ying Pun, start at the wet market to blend with locals and take in fresh produce, seafood and snacks. Nearby, Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park and the Central and Western District Promenade offer large open lawns and waterfront paths, perfect for sunset watching. Don’t skip Art Lane, lined with murals and installations by local artists, which is also our pick for family photos.
In Wong Chuk Hang, we love checking out the factory cafes tucked inside old industrial buildings. The cafes here offer a unique artsy vibe that the usual cafe spots can’t replicate. Not far from here, you can bring the family for a boat ride in Aberdeen, where you’ll float past stilt houses and traditional fishing boats, offering a rare glimpse of Hong Kong’s maritime heritage.
3. Tai O: Boat rides & charming fishing village
For a truly laid-back exploration, Tai O in the New Territories is a must‑visit. This historic fishing village on the western tip of Lantau Island feels worlds apart from the city, with its iconic stilt houses that show how local life has evolved here for generations. We’d recommend taking a boat ride around the village, where you can see the stilt houses up close. Tours are also available on the open bay where you might spot the rare pink dolphins if you’re lucky!
On land, wander through narrow lanes lined with market stalls selling local seafood products. For cultural sights, you can visit Kwan Tai Temple, one of the village’s oldest temples (dating back centuries!).
