Amazon’s Jeff Bezos nears deal to buy stake in Liverpool FC

AI may be an ‘industrial bubble,’ but its benefits to society will be ‘gigantic’

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly nearing a deal to acquire a stake of roughly one-third in English Premier League club Liverpool as part of an investment consortium led by Amit Bhatia, according to Reuters.

The consortium also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and is in talks with Liverpool’s current owner, Fenway Sports Group, or FSG, which acquired the club in 2010. FSG is expected to retain control of the club under the proposed transaction.

The investment could value Liverpool at about $5.9 billion, placing the club among the most highly valued soccer teams in the world. Reuters reported that the consortium is seeking a substantial minority position rather than control of the Premier League club.

Bhatia, who is leading the consortium, is the former chairman and shareholder of Queens Park Rangers and the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Saverin, a Brazilian-born billionaire and Facebook co-founder, is also part of the group.

For Bezos, the proposed investment would add one of the world’s most prominent soccer clubs to his growing portfolio of interests outside Amazon. The billionaire founded Amazon and remains the company’s executive chairman. He also founded aerospace company Blue Origin and owns The Washington Post.

The potential Liverpool investment would give Bezos exposure to one of the world’s most valuable sports properties at a time when international investors continue to show strong interest in English soccer.

Liverpool has been owned by FSG since 2010. The proposed deal comes during a period of significant change at Liverpool. The proposed transaction would not amount to a takeover of Liverpool by Bezos. FSG would remain in control, while the consortium would hold a substantial minority investment.

The club finished fifth in the Premier League last season despite spending about $602 million on players, according to Reuters. Liverpool subsequently parted ways with manager Arne Slot and appointed former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola. Mohamed Salah has also left the club, while former Liverpool executive Michael Edwards stepped down in July.

FSG has previously brought outside investors into the club. In 2023, Dynasty Equity acquired a minority stake in Liverpool, allowing FSG to raise capital while retaining control.

Amazon has also developed a significant relationship with sports broadcasting. The company has streamed Premier League matches in the United Kingdom and other major sporting events, including NFL games in the United States.

The Liverpool investment would therefore bring together Bezos’ interests in technology, media and global sports, although the proposed deal would be a personal investment rather than an Amazon transaction.

The talks remain subject to completion, and the final terms of the investment could change before the transaction is finalized. Reuters reported that the consortium is closing in on the deal but did not report that it had been completed.
