The last time we saw Macaulay Culkin playing the role of Kevin McCallister in an actual movie, it was in 1992’s Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. After two decades, that could change, and we might finally be getting a Home Alone sequel fans deserve.
During a recent episode of The Town podcast, Puck’s Matt Belloni opened up about the possibility of a new Home Alone. He said that Culkin had been speaking to Disney and been offered the chance to do a passion project of his own if he’d return for a new film. Culkin has spoken in the past that he has a good idea for a new movie, and Belloni echoed those thoughts.
“Macaulay Culkin is having his ass kissed like nobody’s business,” Belloni said. “They’re offering him another movie, like he could do his own passion project, if he would also do another Home Alone. He’s got a good idea. I’ve talked to people who have heard it, and it’s a really good idea for a Home Alone reboot with Macaulay Culkin. If that happens and they restart the Home Alone franchise, that would be gigantic for the next 10 years. Because that movie, as you know, is perennially top of the streaming lists from October through Christmas.”
A new Home Alone with Culkin is something fans are all hoping to see
Of course, while much of this remains up in the air as of yet, it can’t help but get fans excited. Culkin’s last time in the Home Alone franchise came in 1992’s sequel, which saw him once again separated from his family, this time in New York. While there have been three more sequels in the film franchise since then, none have starred Culkin, and most have been regarded as lesser entries in the series.
While Culkin has likely not wanted to come back for several reasons, the time feels right. He’s an older actor now, and could provide an entirely different experience to the movie given that. Instead of being a child stuck at home, Culkin’s idea for the movie could be about something entirely different, and give fans even more reason to return to the series since it wouldn’t be about the same old format of a kid going up against adults.
Outside of that, it also would likely generate much more buzz than yet another reboot of the series. Culkin returning to the series would be a big draw for fans who grew up with the original two movies. From a marketing and box office standpoint, this is likely why Disney is so interested, as they know the project would make a ton of money. Culkin has stayed away from the franchise for so long, but it may finally be time to come home again, so to speak.
