Abby Phillip signs new CNN deal

According to Variety, Abby Phillip has struck a new deal with CNN to remain at the network. Three people familiar with the matter said that the news channel’s deal keeps the three hosts of primetime shows cemented in their future. Anderson Cooper, who handles the 8 p.m. slot, renewed his contract last year. The Source’s Kaitlan Collins is also part of a contract that has a few more years left. Phillip reportedly became the last person out of the trio to renew her deal. A network spokesperson declined to comment on contracts with the talent.

Phillip’s career in journalism started as a White House reporter and blogger for Politico. Moreover, she worked at The Washington Post and ABC News. In 2017, Phillip joined CNN and started covering the Trump Administration. She also made guest appearances on C-SPAN and occasionally appeared on Washington Week with Robert Costa. In 2020, viewers saw her co-moderating the seventh Democratic debate of the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries at Drake University.

Further, in 2021, Phillip became the new anchor of the weekend edition of Inside Politics. In 2023, she became the permanent host of CNN’s 10 p.m. ET slot with NewsNight with Abby Phillip. Besides NewsNight, the 37-year-old hosts CNN Saturday Morning Table for Five. She also hosts the program Confessions and Obsessions, which focuses more on the personal interests of guests than their political lives.

CNN renewing the contracts of Phillip, Cooper, and Collins can be taken as part of a distinct strategy. The channel will likely need the trio with the midterm elections on the way, as elections boost viewership of networks.
