Sabrina Wittmann, who in 2024 became the first woman to hold the position of head coach in one of the three strongest ranks of men’s football in Germany, was dismissed today from her position as head coach of Ingolstadt after a poor start to the season.
Wittmann (35) is leaving Ingolstadt after the team suffered three defeats in its last four games, which left them in 13th place among 20 teams in the third division, which further reduced their chances of promotion to the higher league.
The club’s sporting director Harald Gertner said that after recent results and an analysis of the club’s wider development, a “change of direction” was needed.
“On a human and personal level, this decision was very difficult for us,” he added.
Whitman said she wanted him to stay.
“I would be very happy to continue working with a team made up of exceptional personalities. Unfortunately, the trust required for that no longer exists and the club has opted for a different solution,” she said.
Whitman was initially named acting coach for four games in 2024, and was given the permanent job after going undefeated during that period.
