17 Celebrities Whose Health Struggles Stayed Private Until They Died

Celebrities live so much of their lives in public that it can feel like we know just about everything about them. But some were dealing with major health struggles that fans, and sometimes even the people they worked with, had no idea about until after they died. So, here are 17 celebrities whose major health struggles weren’t publicly revealed until after their deaths:

1. According to Vanity Fair, when Chadwick Boseman died in 2020, his family revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer four years earlier and that it eventually progressed to stage 4. During those four years, he continued working on movies like Marshall, Da 5 Bloods, and Black Panther while undergoing surgeries and chemotherapy.

His illness was kept so private that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler reportedly didn’t know. Chadwick had also reportedly intended to begin training for the sequel before his death.

2. According to People, Freddie Mercury spent years shutting down questions about his health before publicly confirming that he had AIDS on Nov. 23, 1991. He died the very next day from bronchial pneumonia caused by the disease. According to People, Freddie had tested positive for HIV in 1987 but continued recording music with Queen as his health declined. He was ultimately too sick to finish recording “Mother Love,” which became the last song he worked on.

3. According to Vanity Fair, after Gene Wilder died in 2016, his family revealed that he had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for three years. His nephew said Gene chose not to make the diagnosis public because he couldn’t bear the thought of a child recognizing Willy Wonka and then having to hear that he was sick. His wife, Karen, later wrote that even as his memory faded, parts of Young Frankenstein stayed with him. At one point, when he could no longer remember the movie’s name, he acted out part of a scene so she would know which film he meant.

4. According to People, David Bowie kept his liver cancer diagnosis private for 18 months, with only a small number of people reportedly knowing he was sick. During that time, he continued working on his final album, Blackstar, and filmed the music video for “Lazarus.” Blackstar came out on his 69th birthday, and Bowie died just two days later. The timing and lyrics led many fans to view the album as a planned goodbye.

5. Aretha Franklin never publicly explained exactly what was happening with her health before she died in 2018. CNN reported that her family said she died from advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type. The public didn’t learn the specific diagnosis until after her death.

6. Entertainment Weekly reported that after Paul Reubens died in 2023, a message posted to his social media accounts revealed that he had been dealing with cancer for six years. His death certificate later showed that he had acute myelogenous leukemia and metastatic lung cancer. Paul apologized for keeping his illness private, writing that he had always felt an enormous amount of love and respect from his fans. Even Matt Wolf, who interviewed Paul for more than 40 hours while making the documentary Pee-wee as Himself, said he never knew Paul was sick.

7. When Dolly Parton died in August 2026, her team revealed that the country legend had been privately dealing with cancer. According to People, her sister Stella later told the magazine that Dolly didn’t want her fans or most of her extended family to know, because she didn’t want anyone worrying about her. Only a few close relatives knew how serious her condition was. Stella also said that Dolly had even considered trying experimental treatments that might help other cancer patients in the future.

8. Alan Rickman kept his pancreatic cancer diagnosis private before his death in 2016, which led the news to be a major shock to his fans and even some people who had worked with him. According to RTÉ, a decade later, his widow, Rima Horton, said that Alan lived for about six months after he was diagnosed. He underwent chemotherapy, which she said extended his life but couldn’t cure the cancer. His diagnosis had not been made public before his death.

9. The extent of Gene Hackman’s health problems wasn’t publicly known until after he and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their home in 2025. According to People, officials said Gene had advanced Alzheimer’s disease in addition to severe heart disease. Betsy died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome roughly a week before Gene, and the medical examiner said his Alzheimer’s was so advanced that he may not have understood that she had died. Gene’s pacemaker showed that he likely remained alone in the house for several days before dying from heart disease.

10. Before Robin Williams died in 2014, he was dealing with paranoia, anxiety, insomnia, memory problems, and trouble moving. Doctors diagnosed him with Parkinson’s disease, but his widow, Susan Schneider Williams, later told Time magazine that an examination of his brain after his death revealed he actually had Lewy body dementia. According to Time, she said doctors told her it was one of the worst cases they had ever seen and that the disease had affected nearly every part of his brain. Robin and his family had no idea what he was actually dealing with while he was alive.

11. After Hulk Hogan died from a heart attack in 2025, People reported that medical records revealed that he also had chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or CLL, as well as a history of atrial fibrillation. The leukemia diagnosis had not previously been made public. Although Hogan had undergone numerous surgeries and people close to him had known about his declining health, fans didn’t know he had cancer until the information appeared in records released after his death.

12. According to People, Norm Macdonald died from cancer in 2021 after keeping his diagnosis private for nine years. His longtime producing partner said he didn’t want the illness to affect the way people saw him or his comedy. His friend, Judd Apatow, later told People that he had no idea Norm was sick during their final show together either. At the end of his set that night, Norm became emotional, told the audience he loved them, and walked offstage.

13. According to ABC News, when Virgil Abloh died in 2021, his family revealed that he had been privately undergoing treatment for cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, since 2019. During those two years, he continued to run his fashion label Off-White and to work as the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear division. His family said he chose to keep the diagnosis private while undergoing multiple treatments and continuing his work.

14. According to the Guardian, shortly after Sean Connery died in 2020, his wife, Micheline Roquebrune, revealed that he had dementia and that it had taken a serious toll on him. She said the actor was eventually unable to express himself. According to Micheline, Sean died peacefully in his sleep at their home in the Bahamas, which was what he had wanted. His dementia had not been publicly disclosed before his death.

15. According to the Guardian, Helen McCrory’s cancer diagnosis was kept so private that even many of her friends didn’t know she was sick. After her death in 2021, theater director Carrie Cracknell said that Helen had told “very, very few people” and asked them not to tell anyone else. Cracknell said the Peaky Blinders and Harry Potter actor didn’t want her illness to overshadow her family, her work, or the charity projects she continued supporting in the weeks before her death.

16. According to ABC News, Kirstie Alley’s children announced her death in 2022 and revealed that she had colon cancer that had “only recently” been discovered. Her representative later confirmed that she had been receiving treatment. However, her family did not disclose exactly when she was diagnosed, what stage the cancer had reached, or what treatment she received.

17. Lastly, according to the Associated Press, after Jimmy Buffett died in 2023, a statement on his website revealed that he had been living with Merkel cell carcinoma for four years. The rare and aggressive form of skin cancer had not previously been publicly disclosed. Jimmy continued performing while receiving treatment and made one final surprise appearance in Rhode Island only two months before his death.
