Hong Kong police have arrested an 87-year-old man after the gravestone of late film star Linda Lin Dai was found damaged.
Lin’s grave at St Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Happy Valley was discovered with its marble altar covered in cement.
In response to South China Morning Post queries, a police spokesman said officers had earlier received a report from a cemetery staff member that a grave was suspected to have been vandalised.
Following an investigation, the 87-year-old was arrested on August 4 and charged with one count of criminal damage. He appeared in Eastern Court on August 17.
The cemetery office confirmed it had referred the case to police and that the suspect had been charged, but declined to comment further.
Linda Ching Yuet-chue – known professionally as Lin Dai – took her own life in her bedroom at the age of 29 in 1964, shocking fans and the film community.
Dubbed the “Elizabeth Taylor of the East”, she won the best actress award at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival four times.
