The recent GTA 6 leaks may not be much of a concern for Rockstar Games, according to former technical developer Obbe Vermeij, who recently stated that he thinks that the situation is “a nothing burger.” Vermeij, who previously served as a technical director for the gaming company, downplayed the unofficial reveals in a recent social media post, claiming that fans will continue to play the game regardless.
Former Rockstar Games technical director shrugs off latest GTA 6 leaks
On August 22, Vermeij took to his official X (formerly Twitter) profile to share his thoughts on the GTA 6 spoilers that have recently surfaced online.
“Calm down everybody. The leaks are a nothing burger,” Vermeij wrote in his post. “As a marketing strategy R* is trying to keep the game under wraps longer than other publishers. All that has happened is that some footage has escaped. Slightly ahead of the Netflix thing next week.”
He added, “90% of future players don’t spend their time on the internet looking for video snippets. They don’t have the time and don’t want spoilers.”
Notably, the spoilers published so far seem to have been the work of a hacker who goes by the pseudonym Cyberleek. The anonymous leaker has been posting videos of gameplay from GTA 6 since August 18, seemingly in protest of the game’s digital pre-orders, its single-player DLC, and Sony’s plans to halt physical game disc production.
Vermeij continued, “I imagine the teams are a little annoyed about it but not more than that. I was there during Hot Coffee. It was a nightmare for management (R*NewYork) but didn’t affect us (R*North) much. The current leaks are far less consequential than HC was. It looks like gta6 will be phenomenal and sell for the next 15 years or so. The leaks are just a tiny blip.”
He further claimed that “people will still play” GTA 6 even if Cyberleek leaks the game’s ending.
An extended look at the game is on track to premiere on Netflix on August 27. Meanwhile, the game itself is currently scheduled to be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
