The Premier League bubble continues to expand at a pace only the Universe itself can compete with. Rising transfer fees across the board mean that the cosmic plane has flipped; Bournemouth can outbid AC Milan, and Europe’s next rising star is choosing Brighton over Barcelona. The Premier League is the de-facto Super League©, but not all the investments work out.
Here’s a look at some of the most expensive disappointments in Premier League transfer history.
Mykhailo Mudryk: Shakhtar Donestsk to Chelsea for £62 million (~$79 million)
Chelsea paid an initial £62 million (about $79 million) to sign star winger Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023, with clauses and add-ons potentially seeing the money move into the £89 million (about $113 million) range. Alas, none of that happened.
He arrived with a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young wingers, but the output has been, well, let’s say, modest. Mudryk scored 10 goals in 73 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions, and failed to establish himself as a starter.
His situation later became even more complicated following a doping case that led to a lengthy suspension before a return to training. Instead of getting their replacement for Eden Hazard, they have ended up with a $100 million mop of blond hair.
Jadon Sancho: BVB to Manchester United for £73 million (~$93 million)
Here we go: Manchester United. One of England’s most succesful clubs, they have made enough money to spend unwisely and still be successful. But they haven’t done that at all. They’ve spent unwisely and been unsuccessful.
The Salford club finally landed Jadon Sancho in 2021, they paid £73 million (about $93 million) after a long pursuit. At Borussia Dortmund he had been one of Europe’s most productive young attackers, regularly producing goals and assists. At Old Trafford, as they waded through players, managers, and club staff, that level never returned.
Sancho finished his United career with 12 goals and 12 assists in 112 Premier League appearances, and his time at the club was marked by fluctuating form, periods out of the team and a public falling-out with manager Erik ten Hag.
Antony: Ajax to Manchester United for £82 million (~$104 million)
OK, so Jadon Sancho wasn’t a success, but there’s this lad from Ajax who sounds good. I’m sure he can replace him…
Buying Antony from Ajax for a reported £82 million (about $104 million) in 2022 made him one of the most expensive players in the club’s history. Signed at Erik ten Hag’s request (remember him?), the Brazilian was expected to bring goals, creativity and flair to the right wing. He brought, well, nothing.
Antony scored 12 Premier League goals in 96 league appearances for the club, who eventually accepted a major financial loss when they moved him on.

Tomas Brolin: Parma to Leeds United for £4.5 million (~$7 million in mid-1990s dollars)
Leeds United paid roughly £4.5 million (about $7 million back then) for Tomas Brolin in 1995, a significant fee at the time for a player who had starred for Sweden at the 1994 World Cup. Supporters expected a creative force capable of transforming the attack, exactly what they had seen him do as the standout player at that tournament.
Instead, Brolin waddled around badly with what we shall call match fitness and conditioning. He scored only 4 goals in 20 league appearances for Leeds before his spell quickly unravelled. The transfer itself was a major disappointment and is still remembered as one of the club’s poorest recruitment decisions of the Premier League era. At least things would soon get better: the club made the Champions League in 2000/01 and then nothing else went wrong at all with the club in the years after that.
Honourable mentions:
Alexis Sánchez to Manchester United (2018): he was free, but his £500,000 per week wages (roughly $640,000 weekly at the time) certainly weren’t.
Nicolas Pépé to Arsenal from Lille for £72 million (~$87 million) in 2019: came to London as one of Europe’s best attackers, scored 16 Premier League goals in 80 league matches, and left for free to Trabzonspor.
David Bentley to Spurs from Blackburn Rovers for £15 million (~$30 million) in 2008: Some lovely hair, comparisons to David Beckham, and the potential to be an England regular. Two goals in 42 games later, those comparisons soon faded.
