Prairie Village’s newest restaurant is covered with yellow and green paint strokes that curve and loop into the shape of a blooming lemon tree.
The mural and restaurant name — Flower Child — are meant to symbolize freshness. Much like the quality of food they aim to deliver.
Boasting of bountiful bowls and salads, Flower Child is opening to the public on Tuesday at 3915 W. 83rd St., but The Star got a peek at the space ahead of its debut. There, regional operations manager Kenny Barsalou bragged about the brand inside a plush restaurant booth.
“We try to serve as fresh as possible and as high-quality as possible,” he told The Star. “I think that’s not something you get from most fast-casual healthier (kinds) of concepts.”
What if someone’s gluten-free? Vegan? Vegetarian? That’s not a problem, Barsalou said.
Not only is the new restaurant health-conscious, it caters to all kinds of diets. Menu items are highly customizable, and Baraslou said staff are trained on preventing cross contamination.
Regardless of whether customers have dietary restrictions, the aim is excellent meals. There’s no freezer or fryer on the premises.
“It’s just great food, prepared with a lot of love and really great ingredients,” Barsalou said.
If you ask a Flower Child employee for a recommendation, they might point you toward the Mother Earth bowl ($12.45) with ancient grains, sweet potato, portobello mushroom, avocado, cucumber, broccoli pesto, charred onion, leafy greens, red pepper miso vinaigrette and hemp seed. It’s the most popular item on the menu.
There are dozens more options in the form of bowls, wraps, salads, desserts and more.
Baraslou said the mac and cheese, whose price fluctuates depending on protein and sides, is another favorite. Other dishes include the ginger miso crunch salad ($10.75), Peruvian braised beef bowl ($17.25), avocado hummus ($8.25) and chicken enchiladas ($15.95).
He hopes men won’t be dissuaded by the floral accents. Many are surprised to see how many protein-heavy options the restaurant has, he said.
“Initially, our concept speaks to vibrant, healthier eating. It seems like it’s more female-driven,” Barsalou said. “But then you get guys coming in … And they’re sold on it.”
An employee advised The Star not to leave without trying a glass of fresh-squeezed rose petal lemonade. It’s Flower Child’s signature drink.
Beyond the restaurant’s lemon decor, bright paintings hang on its white, paneled walls. Light wood traces the space, which has wicker fixtures and concrete floors.
“The fun thing about Flower Child is none of the buildings are cookie-cutter,” Barsalou said. “They’re all a little bit different.”
One feature that’s likely not present in any other location: block letters spelling “Ad Astra” and encircled with stars.
The space itself is just over 3,700 square feet, with 75 seats inside and 60 seats on its outdoor patio.
This is Flower Child’s 45th restaurant and the first in Kansas. It opened a spot in Omaha just a few weeks ago, and it’s held a space in St. Louis since 2024.
But the brand itself started in 2014 — the brainchild of restaurateur Sam Fox of Fox Restaurant Concepts.
It began in Tucson but has ballooned in recent years. Now it has locations in Texas, California, Colorado, Nevada, Utah and several other states.
“I think we always had a really great concept, and people gravitated to it initially because it makes healthy food craveable,” Barsalou explained. “Coming out of COVID, I think we really fine-tuned the operation quite a bit and really put ourselves in the position to hit the ground running when the world opened back up.”
Fox also owns Olive & Ivy, The Arrogant Butcher, Dough Bird, The Henry, Pushing Daisies, Blanco and several other concepts.
Across the street in Corinth Square, fast-casual health concept Modern Market Eatery serves bowls, salads, pizzas and more. It’s owned by Thrive Restaurant Group, which is headquartered in Wichita.
From Tuesday on, Flower Child will be open daily, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
