The United States on Monday condemned what it described as “dangerous and aggressive” action by China, whose personnel are accused of injuring a Filipino sailor at a shoal in the disputed South China Sea.
The statement came after Manila –– a key US ally –– stated that a Chinese coast guard officer repeatedly struck a Filipino sailor on the head with a wooden baton, causing injuries to him and damaging a navy rubber boat.
“The United States condemns China’s dangerous and aggressive actions against Philippine navy personnel at Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea on July 20, 2026, and calls on China to immediately cease its destabilising conduct,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement.
Pigott condemned what he described as Beijing’s “troubling pattern of provocation” against lawful Philippine maritime operations, saying the action “undermines regional peace and stability and directly contradicts China’s repeated commitments to resolve disputes peacefully”.
“We stand with our Ally, the Philippines,” he declared.
According to Manila, the enconuter unfolded near the BRP Sierra Madre, when a Chinese inflatable boat with eight personnel onboard approached the outpost at close range and “reacted violently and aggressively” when two Philippine navy boats moved to drive the vessel away.
The development also coincided with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Manila, Philippines, to attend foreign ministers’ talks with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The ongoing tumult in the South China Sea are likely to dominate the discussions, as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to attend the meeting.
