Netflix has provided new insight into the cancellation of The Boroughs, with a senior executive explaining that the decision was not based on a single factor. While discussing the streamer’s recent slate and overall performance, Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of UCAN Scripted Series, acknowledged the show’s cancellation. She also suggested that a combination of considerations ultimately led to the series ending after one season.
Addressing the cancellation, Howe said Netflix approaches every renewal decision with careful consideration. According to Deadline, she said, “There’s so many factors that go into when we ultimately decide that we’re not going to be able to bring a show back; it’s something we’re really thoughtful and considerate about.”
The executive further noted that “there were a lot of different factors that weighed into that decision in particular.” Howe added, “We’re really, really proud of that show, we think they delivered a very entertaining cinematic experience for many, many people who loved it.”
Executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, The Boroughs premiered on May 21 and opened to strong reviews but struggled to generate strong viewership. The series also carried a significant production budget, which Deadline reported was one of the factors considered in Netflix’s renewal decisions. The cast included Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman.
Howe addressed the cancellation while also discussing Netflix’s success. The streamer recently earned 111 Emmy nominations, while Harlan Coben’s I Will Find You continued its strong run. Meanwhile, The Boroughs ultimately received no Emmy nominations.
