The popular northbound cross-border scheme allowing Hong Kong vehicles to travel to Guangdong province has been extended by five years, mainland authorities have announced, as the initial three-year implementation period is set to expire.
Under the “Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles” scheme, eligible private car owners in Hong Kong can drive into Guangdong via the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge without a mainland number plate or dual-plate permit.
Drivers can stay in Guangdong for up to 30 consecutive days per trip, with a maximum of 180 days per year. The bridge remains the only designated border crossing under the scheme.
In an official notice published on Saturday, the Guangdong provincial government announced that the scheme’s validity would be extended by five years until June 1, 2031. It originally came into effect on June 1, 2023, for a three-year period.
“Any issues encountered during the implementation of the northbound travel scheme should be reported to the Department of Public Security of Guangdong Province,” the notice said.
