Fire at Wilton cafe connected to coffee roaster, officials say

The back part of the building, which also housed a rental unit and an apartment, was badly damaged in the fire.

WILTON, Maine — The Office of the State Fire Marshal (FMO) determined a fire at Chaos Coffee Cafe in Wilton originated in a food preparation area at a coffee roaster.

The fire happened at around 7 p.m. on Sunday at the building on Main Street, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety. The building houses Chaos Coffee Cafe on the first floor, a rental unit on the second floor, and an apartment unit on the third floor.

When the Wilton Fire Department arrived, they saw flames on the back side of the wooden framed building, the release stated.

The fire caused extensive damage to the back part of the cafe and food preparation area, according to officials. The rest of the building also had smoke and water damage, rendering it uninhabitable.

One woman who was a tenant was taken to the hospital where she was treated and released for smoke inhalation, officials said. No firefighters were hurt.

The Wilton Fire Department had help from Farmington, Jay, East Dixfield, and Chesterville fire departments.

The FMO determined the cause of the fire was accidental.
