Hong Kong International Airport has reopened its rebuilt Terminal 2, with 15 airlines relocating check-in operations ahead of the summer travel season. The expansion introduces advanced passenger technology, increased processing capacity, and forms part of the airport’s massive three-runway development project aimed at strengthening Hong Kong’s role as a global aviation hub.
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has officially unveiled its rebuilt Terminal 2 (T2), marking a major milestone in the airport’s long-term expansion strategy and the continued rollout of its HK$141 billion Three-Runway System project. The new terminal will begin handling departure operations on May 27, 2026, with 15 airlines relocating their check-in services in phases through mid-June ahead of the busy summer travel season.
The reopening represents the first significant passenger-capacity expansion at HKIA since the airport introduced simultaneous three-runway operations in late 2024. Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) expects the upgraded terminal to handle approximately eight million passenger journeys during its first year of operation.
Phased Airline Relocation Begins May 27
According to AAHK, the airlines relocating to T2 primarily operate regional and short-haul routes. Hong Kong Airlines will become the first airline to move its check-in operations to the new facility on May 27, followed by Greater Bay Airlines on June 3 and HK Express on June 10. Selected flights operated by Cathay Pacific are also expected to transition to T2.
Although passengers will check in at T2, boarding operations will continue to take place at Terminal 1 for now. Travelers will use HKIA’s Automated People Mover system to transfer between the terminals. A future T2 concourse, scheduled for completion in 2027, will eventually add 27 boarding gates, including seven multi-aircraft ramp stands.
New Technology and Passenger Experience
The rebuilt terminal introduces a wide range of passenger-processing technologies designed to improve efficiency and reduce congestion. The departure hall features:
- 160 check-in counters across eight aisles
- Self-service bag-drop systems
- Biometric e-security gates
- Redesigned smart screening lanes
- Direct links to the Airport Express rail station
- Enhanced airport bus connectivity with 29 routes serving T2
Airport officials say the redesign is intended to improve passenger flow and prepare HKIA for continued traffic growth across Asia-Pacific aviation markets.
Economic Impact and Aviation Jobs
The opening ceremony on May 22 doubled as an industry showcase and employment initiative. More than 1,500 guests attended the event, while the HKIA Expo & Career Fair hosted around 40 aviation-related companies offering over 4,400 job opportunities across airport operations, engineering, security, maintenance, catering, logistics, and passenger services.
AAHK Chief Executive Officer Vivian Cheung described the terminal opening as “another milestone” in the airport’s development and said the project would help drive employment and broader economic growth in Hong Kong’s aviation sector.
Strategic Expansion for Hong Kong Aviation
The redevelopment of Terminal 2 forms part of HKIA’s broader effort to reinforce Hong Kong’s position as a leading international aviation hub within the Greater Bay Area. Passenger numbers at HKIA continue recovering strongly following the pandemic-era downturn, with airport authorities expecting further increases in both regional leisure travel and business aviation demand.
Industry analysts view the reopening as a critical capacity upgrade that should help alleviate pressure on Terminal 1 during peak travel periods while supporting long-term airline growth in the region.
