Hong Kong’s food safety watchdog has urged people with gluten allergies not to eat a Marks & Spencer yoghurt product after the allergen was found but not declared on the label.
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) said on Monday night it was investigating the omission of gluten from the ingredients list of the supermarket’s authentic vanilla Greek yoghurt product.
The affected batch, imported by Alf Retail Hong Kong Limited, is sold in 500g (18oz) packs with a use-by date of May 12.
“The CFS noticed that the above-mentioned batch of the product concerned might contain gluten, a known allergen, which was not declared on its food label and followed up with the relevant importer,” the centre said.
It added that the importer had confirmed it brought the affected batch into Hong Kong and had voluntarily stopped sales, removed the product from shelves and initiated a recall as a precaution.
A CFS spokesman said consumers could call its hotline on 800 931 457 during office hours regarding the recall.
