The government's proposed legislative amendments to allow pet dogs to enter restaurants are to come into effect in early May.
Some lawmakers today sought clarity about food safety issues related to the pet rules.
The government is expected to issue 500 to 1,000 relevant licences by the middle of the year, accounting for 3 to 5 percent of all restaurants in Hong Kong.
Following the legislation, the government will roll out large-scale publicity campaigns, including briefing sessions and promotional videos.
Applications from restaurants will open in late May.
Responding to lawmakers who raised food safety concerns, Deputy Secretary for Environment and Ecology on Food Ivy Law says licencing conditions will clearly prohibit on-table heating or cooking in clients' area, including open flames or electric stove heating appliances.
She says if eateries wish to serve hotpot, the food must be fully prepared before being brought to the table.
