Hong Kong Tech Delegation Targets Market Expansion at MWC

Following its successful participation last year, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) has returned to Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona. Together with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the delegation is showcasing 20 Hong Kong technology companies and institutions.

Established in 2001, HKSTP was created to build a thriving innovation and technology ecosystem. Today, it supports 12 unicorns, more than 16,000 research professionals, and over 2,400 technology companies from 24 countries and regions. These companies focus on areas such as healthtech, artificial intelligence and robotics, fintech, and smart city technologies.

During the event in Barcelona, Telecompaper spoke with Derek Chim, Head of Startup Ecosystem and Development at HKSTP, about the opportunities for startups and the progress already achieved.

“We felt it was important to present an even clearer picture of Hong Kong’s innovation and technology capabilities, in order to be visible to global telecom leaders, enterprise decision-makers, industry partners and investors. In addition, it is crucial to translate groundbreaking research and development (R&D) into practical applications and bring Hong Kong’s I&T sector onto the international stage,” says Chim. “Given the attention we are receiving here, we believe we have succeeded.”

This year, the organisation is going a step further by featuring solutions beyond the Connectivity category, covering also areas such as Devices and Systems, Digital Transformation, and support from Ecosystem Partners.
“Because MWC is a global benchmark for communications technology and technology companies, we help our participants connect with the industry and investors,” Chim explains. “The aim is to create a foundation that validates solutions, stimulates pilot projects, potentially accelerates commercialisation and enables companies to scale internationally.”

Hong Kong Tech Pavilion

The Hong Kong Tech Pavilion provides an important platform for Hong Kong technology enterprises to present their latest R&D achievements at major international technology events. It also supports their efforts to explore overseas markets while highlighting Hong Kong’s strengths as an international innovation and technology hub.

“As a region, Hong Kong is particularly strong in three key sub-sectors: Life and Health-related technologies, Micro-electronics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Companies looking to collaborate in these fields should definitely work with us,” says Chim. “In terms of AI competitiveness, we rank third in the world after the NYC and London according to the “Global Artificial Intelligence Competitiveness Index”.

HKSTP supports startups through its F.U.E.L. framework:
Follow: A structured approach to track the startup journey, focusing on clinical trial readiness
Upskill: Enhancing entrepreneurs’ skills through training and mentorship
Expose: Providing opportunities for market exposure and connections with industry leaders
Link: Connecting startups with multinational corporations and healthcare groups to develop commercial solutions

This comprehensive, goal-driven structure is designed to accelerate Tech startups through clear milestones and targeted support.

Inside the spacious pavilion — which includes its own theatre and presentation stages — startups present and demonstrate their innovations. Two solutions that are already market-ready and show strong potential for expansion are Asmote and eSIX.

Asmote: mmWave Technology for Industrial Networks

Operating under the Shannon & Turing brand, Asmote specialises in mmWave technology for Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC).

Telecompaper spoke with Kelvin Zhang, General Manager at Asmote: “Our private network solution uses dedicated mmWave spectrum that operates independently from public networks and provides full enterprise control at significantly lower costs. All network elements can be privately deployed with customisable architecture and industrial-grade deterministic requirements. This guarantees data security, eliminates interference from public networks and enables seamless integration with existing industrial infrastructures.”

“We are recognised for our efficient approach to managing industrial environments such as smart ports and dark factories,” Kelvin Zhang explains. “We are proud to have secured the world’s first commercial 26GHz mmWave 5G communications project, demonstrating our leadership in industrial applications.”

Kinson Chan, CEO at eSIX

eSIX: Extending Maritime Connectivity

eSIX is a leader in high-performance network technology, specialising in the seamless integration of legacy infrastructure with modern 5G ecosystems. During its presentation at MWC, the company highlighted its Maritime Communication solution. CEO Kinson Chan explained the challenge the company addressed.

“A government fisheries department struggled with costly and slow satellite communications for maritime patrol operations,” says Chan. “The existing system lacked the bandwidth required for real-time data transfer. The challenge was to develop a cost-effective solution capable of transmitting real-time video across a wide area to support vessel monitoring, safety inspections and emergency assistance.”

“Since traditional communication methods were insufficient due to their limited range and high cost, we deployed OcéanoX 5G CPE, an ultra-range 5G solution for maritime environments. It enables connectivity up to 80 kilometres from the coastline — guaranteed — far exceeding the typical 5–10 kilometre range of existing devices. And we can certainly expand that range even further.”

The OcéanoX solution represents a maritime connectivity breakthrough by integrating hybrid 5G and satellite networks for uninterrupted offshore operations. Key benefits include:
Cost efficiency: Lower communication costs compared with traditional satellite systems
High-speed connectivity: Real-time video and data for faster response times
Enhanced operations: Support for critical maritime activities and safety operations

Strengthening Global Collaboration

According to Derek Chim, HKSTP continues to work closely with HKTDC to support Hong Kong technology companies in their global expansion by jointly organising the Hong Kong Tech Pavilion.

“The collaboration should accelerate the internationalisation of the sector to meet the growing global demand for innovation and technology,” says Chim. “We hope to attract even more talent and facilitate investment, enabling entrepreneurs to reach the global market. With this 2026 edition of MWC and the entire delegation, we have further consolidated Hong Kong’s position as an international I&T hub.”
