The video, posted on social media on Monday morning, showed a man in the airport’s departure hall pushing over several self-check-in kiosks and hitting them repeatedly with a stanchion.
Police said the man had been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and possession of a Part 1 poison. A source later confirmed that the man was a 35-year-old British national.
The insider said the suspect was a tourist who had arrived in Hong Kong in November last year and was permitted to stay for six months.
“Before the incident took place, the arrested man had plans to purchase a ticket at the airport to leave Hong Kong,” the source said.
However, the man became agitated at aisle J of the departure hall, using his trolley to push down a metal railing. He then pushed down 10 self-check-in kiosks and damaged a glass panel at the check-in counter, the source said.
