A driver and his passenger were arrested after their car, which had an expired licence and allegedly contained small amounts of the drug etomidate, hit a police vehicle, a taxi and a bus while attempting to evade officers on a northern Hong Kong road.

The crash on Thursday left three people injured including two police officers. The driver and a woman were arrested at the scene on suspicion of offences including dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and possession of suspected dangerous drugs.

Police said that at about 9.30am, officers on patrol detected the expired vehicle licence of a BMW on Lam Kam Road in the New Territories using an automatic number plate recognition system.

When officers signalled for the car to stop, the driver allegedly sped off towards Tolo Highway. The car was later intercepted near the Kwong Fuk roundabout, where it reportedly tried to squeeze between a bus and a taxi.

It collided with both vehicles before reversing into a police car that had arrived at the scene.

Footage circulating online showed officers surrounding the damaged BMW. Officers were also seen striking the BMW’s front and rear windscreens with batons before removing the driver and the woman.
