The Hong Kong Jockey Club is planning to build its fourth public riding school on a former landfill site in Tseung Kwan O to reduce applicant wait times and boost the equestrian talent pool.
The project has already gained in-principle support from authorities and the club will seek town planning approval in the first quarter of next year and begin construction as early as the end of 2027, according to a paper submitted to Sai Kung District Council.
The plan will be part of the agenda of a council meeting on January 6.
The facility is expected to be open to the public in 2030 to address strong demand, with more than 20,000 people currently queuing for a spot in the existing three schools and average waiting times lasting several years.
“To cater for the growing demand, the club has decided to open its fourth public riding school in Tseung Kwan O after cautious planning,” the paper read.
“Apart from facilitating residents living in the southeastern New Territories, we also hope to shorten the overall waiting time and nurture more excellent equestrians.
