With the conclusion of the Canadian Premier League season, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 184 players playing in Canada’s first division. Following the update, David Rodríguez, who was the hero in the final between Atlético Ottawa and Cavalry FC (2-1 a.e.t), is now the CPL’s most valuable player.
On loan from sister club Atlético de San Luis, Rodríguez’s “icicle kick” goal in the final against Cavalry went around the world. But it would be unfair to limit Rodríguez to just that one goal. After all, the 23-year-old playmaker, who holds both US and Mexican passports, had a fantastic season in Canada. Rodríguez managed 14 goals and 10 assists in 34 games across all competitions, and an argument can be made that he was the best player in the CPL by some margin last season. And interest in him is now high. Consequently, Rodríguez’s market value is up from €200,000 to €275,000.
With his new market value, Rodríguez jumps ahead of teammate Ballou Tabla. Although Tabla played a decent season with Ottawa, scoring 13 goals and 4 assists in 34 games, at 26, and failed attempts in Europe, Transfermarkt believes that the market is somewhat limited now for the winger. As a result, a downgrade was unavoidable. At €250,000, Tabla remains among the most valuable players in the CPL. The same can be said about Manny Aparicio. An incredible player for CPL standards, Aparicio has now turned 30, and a downgrade from €250,000 to €200,000 due to age was unavoidable.
CPL market values: Many upgrades for Ottawa – Young players to watch
Other than Tabla and Aparicio, the update has been very positive for the Canadian Premier League champions. Defender Noah Abatneh, who has drawn interest from Major League Soccer, and top striker Samuel Salter saw their market values upgraded by €75,000 and €50,000, respectively, to €250,000. Salter will move on to Sweden, where he will join his former Ottawa teammate Matteo de Brienne at GAIS. Other players with upgrades at Ottawa are 19-year-old Joaquim Coulanges and 17-year-old Sergey Kozlovskiy. Both are up by €50,000 from €100,000 to €150,000.
Outside Ottawa, several younger players across the league have seen significant increases in market value. At Vancouver FC, 21-year-old striker Ndiaye Pathé saw his market value increase by 1150% from €10,000 to €125,000. Over at York United, 17-year-old wonderkid Shola Jimoh saw his market value increase by €100,000 from €75,000 to €175,000. At HFX Wanderers, Canadian junior national team striker Tiago Coimbra saw his market value increase from €125,000 to €200,000.
