GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Pitt County Schools is being recognized nationally for its commitment to healthier, more innovative meals for students.
The district is one of 14 in North Carolina to receive a Healthy Meal Incentive Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Action for Healthy Kids, state education officials announced Monday. The award honors school systems that go beyond federal nutrition standards to improve meal quality and student engagement.
Pitt County earned recognition in the “Innovation in Nutrition Education” category for efforts to include students in menu planning and promote healthy eating habits across its campuses.
“It’s a great honor! We are so happy to bring it back to the district and be shown that the extras we do, do mean a difference and others see that through throughout the united states,” Pitt County Schools Director of School Nutrition Gretchen Wilson said.
The USDA’s Healthy Meal Incentive initiative supports schools in adopting sustainable improvements to meal programs. Districts that receive the awards can access resources, grants and national exposure for their approaches to student nutrition.
