CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Something I hear quite often is, Healthy eating is expensive? Think again! I want to show you some of my favorite budget-friendly grocery finds—all under $5, that are nutritious and can help you create well-balanced meals or snacks.
First up in the produce department, my picks are sweet potatoes, bananas, and frozen broccoli.
Sweet potatoes are high in fiber and vitamin A and can be cooked in the oven, microwave, air fryer, stove, etc. I like these as a side, but I also love them topped with some chicken, cheese, and buffalo sauce for a main dish.
Bananas don’t need much. These are great if you have athletes in your house, an easy snack, or an addition to a breakfast smoothie.
Broccoli or really any combo of frozen veggie is a quick, nutritious side or can be added to a can of soup, casserole, or chopped up into a red sauce.
Pantry staples under $5.
Dry lentils or canned beans. A wonderful, inexpensive protein to have on hand. Whole-grain pasta. We have pasta once a week, always an easy dish, and whole grain is going to add some additional nutrients. Oats for breakfast or baking. We’ve got a couple of great granola bar recipes that I love to make for easy breakfasts.
More tips to stretch your dollar: Buy in bulk when on sale, use store-brand products, which are just as nutritious, and plan meals around what’s in season or on sale. We’re always happy to help!
Healthy eating doesn’t have to cost a lot. With a little planning and prep, it’s easy. And if you would like me to show you more, visit Fareway.com
