Marles welcomes US effort to de-escalate Israel-Syria tensions

Acting PM Richard Marles has welcomed efforts to de-escalate the conflict between Israel and Syria.

Israel launched airstrikes in the Syrian capital Damascus overnight. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hassaid steps had been agreed to bring the conflict to an end.

“We want to see a de-escalation,” Marles told ABC Radio National Breakfast.

“So that would seem to be good news that is coming from the US Secretary of State. But you know, our position on this is that, obviously, what we want to see is a de-escalation in the conflict that’s playing out in the Middle East.”

Albanese to wrap up China visit in Chengdu

By Stephen Dziedzic in Chengdu

Anthony Albanese will today visit the central Chinese city of Chengdu as he finishes his six-day trip to the country.

The prime minister is keen to emphasise commercial and economic links between Chengdu and Australia – including in the medical technology industry.

Albanese is expected to tour a manufacturing and research centre owned by the Australian hearing implant company Cochlear, as well as meeting other major players in the industry.

Chengdu sits in Sichuan province, which is home to the giant panda, and the prime minister is also widely expected to visit a nearby breeding centre for the iconic species.

The visit comes in the wake of China’s move to send two new giant pandas to Adelaide Zoo earlier this year.
