Footage aired by CCTV showed heavy rain and trees downed by strong winds in Hainan.
Typhoon Wutip halted airport operations in Sanya from 1400GMT on Thursday (June 12) and forced school and business closures, according to CCTV.
Wutip is the first named typhoon of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season and it is expected to make landfall at China’s southern coast around noon on Saturday (June 14).
