14 Times Celebrities Publicly Melted Down Over Their Exes Online

These 14 stars didn’t just go through a breakup — they processed it live, in front of all of us, one cryptic caption (or full-blown diss track) at a time. Breakups are hard enough when only your group chat is watching. Now, imagine going through one with several million people refreshing your Instagram Stories in real time. Here are 15 celebrities who were very, VERY open about their breakups on social media:

1. Kanye West basically turned his Instagram into a 2022 group chat about Pete Davidson, and none of us asked to be added. After Pete Davidson started dating his ex-wife Kim Kardashian in 2022, Ye posted a barrage of since-deleted attacks calling Davidson “Skete,” mocking his tattoos, and even sharing a photoshopped New York Times headline reading “SKETE DAVIDSON DEAD AT AGE 28” days after Kardashian and Davidson split. Instagram restricted his account for 24 hours over the posts.

2. Halsey’s breakup with G-Eazy basically played out in real time, one cryptic tweet at a time. After announcing their split via Instagram Story in 2018, Halsey tweeted (then deleted) a scissors emoji fans connected to a “Him & I” lyric about cheating, and followed it up the next day with just “pumpkin eater” (as in “cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater”), and later wrote a whole thread about being a “control freak” who needed to “learn how to bow at the hand of ‘maybe.'” She drove the point home performing “Without Me” on SNL with the words “I’m so sorry Ashley I cheated” displayed behind her.

3. Khloé Kardashian’s Instagram Story became a steady drip of “this is fine” energy during the Tristan Thompson/Jordyn Woods scandal. After it broke that Tristan had allegedly cheated with Jordyn Woods, Khloé didn’t address it directly — she just posted a string of cryptic quotes, including one that read, “They cheated because they wanted to, they lied because they could, and now they’re sorry because they got caught,” along with another about friendships not lasting past seven years.

4. Cardi B turned her Instagram captions into a subliminal soundtrack for her split from Offset. Cardi announced her split from Offset on Instagram Live in March 2024, then kept posting captions widely read as digs at her estranged husband in the months that followed, all while the two cycled through filing for divorce, pausing it, and refiling.

5. Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s “amicable” joint statement didn’t stay amicable for long once the leaks started. The two announced their split with a Notes-app-style joint statement about ending things “amicably.” Days later, sources started feeding conflicting narratives to tabloids — including claims (which Jonas’s camp denied pushing) that painted Turner as an absent parent — and the exes ended up in dueling legal filings over their kids before things cooled off.

6. Noah Cyrus turned her breakup tears into literal merchandise. After splitting from rapper Lil Xan in 2018, Noah sold bottled “tears” for $12,000 through a collab with the brand Pizzaslime — possibly the most extra breakup PR stunt to ever happen on social media.

7. Lena Dunham aired out a list of potential baby names she made with her ex. In 2018, Dunham posted an old list of baby names she and her then-ex Jack Antonoff had brainstormed together — a move that read as somewhere between nostalgic and pointed, depending on who you asked.

8. Russell Brand tweeted an unflattering photo of Katy Perry, and it aged into one of the messiest exes-on-main moments of the 2010s. Years before their split made headlines for other reasons, Brand posted a no-makeup photo of Perry taken after he startled her awake — a moment fans have pointed to as an early red flag in their relationship.

9. Brooke Schofield used a TikTok storytime to lay out her side of her breakup with musician Clinton Kane, and the internet was fully here for it. After her ex-boyfriend started subtly dragging her online, Schofield responded with a multi-part TikTok storytime sharing her side of the relationship — and came out of it with thousands of new followers.

10. Amber Rose and Kanye West’s Twitter war set the bar for messy ex-on-ex combat back in 2015. After Kanye made comments about their past relationship, Rose clapped back on Twitter with the now-legendary “30 showers” line, and the two spent days trading increasingly personal jabs while the internet collectively lost it.

11. Karrueche Tran didn’t hold back when it came to calling out Chris Brown publicly. After their on-and-off relationship ended, Tran was vocal on social media about wanting distance from Brown, eventually securing a restraining order and addressing the situation candidly online rather than staying quiet.

In a 2015 Instagram post addressing Brown, Tran wrote, “First off @chrisbrownofficial you just did an interview w Ryan Seacrest in which you spoke about me. My interview w Access Hollywood was not entirely about you.. they asked a question and as a mature adult I answered. I’m not gonna shy away from something that I lived through. I’m talking about my life and experiences. I’m not speaking on you or bashing you (like I easily could). Don’t be mad at me because our relationship is over due to your lack of loyalty. You know what’s weak?? You forcing yourself into my car.. my broken window.. blowing up my phone.. trying to shower me w gifts.. Man the fuck up and change the bs in your life like I’ve told you several times.”

She then followed up with a Tweet that said, “I hate the petty shit.. But I was really only minding my business today……….”

12. Max Ehrich aired out his breakup with Demi Lovato in a series of Instagram Stories, and her camp clapped right back. After their whirlwind, two-month-old engagement ended in September 2020, Ehrich posted Stories claiming he’d “found out about the status of [his] relationship through a tabloid.” Sources close to Lovato fired back that she’d told him directly beforehand and accused him of “using her name” to boost his own fame.

13. Megan Fox quoted Beyoncé at Machine Gun Kelly, then deleted her entire Instagram account. In February 2023, Fox posted a mirror selfie captioned with a “Pray You Catch Me” lyric — “You can taste the dishonesty / it’s all over your breath” — alongside a video of her burning what looked like letters and clothing. She scrubbed every photo of MGK from her grid, then deactivated her account entirely.

14. Jennifer Lopez quietly deleted years of Bennifer wedding photos, and that said plenty on its own. After filing for divorce from Ben Affleck in 2024, Lopez scrubbed wedding and anniversary posts from her Instagram grid — no caption, no statement, just a very loud kind of silence that fans immediately clocked.
