The annual Vegetarian Food Asia event opened at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre this morning. Together with the Vitality Living Asia Fair, there were over 230 exhibitors at the event. Twenty-five percent came from overseas.

Healthy living has become a priority for many people.

At Vegetarian Food Asia, exhibitors from Hong Kong, the mainland and overseas offer a slew of products for visitors, ranging from fresh vegetables to black sesame paste.

This Italian booth is among the newcomers at the event, providing a taste of vegan pizzas and pastries to customers.

Have you ever had dishes made with tempeh, an Indonesian staple made from fermented soybeans?

Exhibitor Paolo said: "It's easy to digest and it somehow gives you a lot of probiotics as well. Among all the vegetables, tempeh contains all nine amino acids, so this is what is called products with full protein. That's why we develop these food, and we find out it is possible that we didn't have to rely on additives, preservatives or extractive protein or chemical stuff."

Apart from nutritional values, he said the Hong Kong vegan market is growing.

"A lot of people now start to understand that ultra-processed food and fast food are not good for their health, so they want to try something that's more natural. I think it's like back to the past."

Visitors can also try vegan dishes at the food zone area, such as this radish cake, across the three-day event.

For the first time, an exhibition focusing on health and wellness is being held concurrently with the vegetarian fair.

Some booths hope to help improve customers' sleep quality, promoting products like sleeping tablets with tomato extract as a natural source of Melatonin.
