US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he may impose additional tariffs on China, similar to the 25 per cent duties announced earlier on India over its imports of Russian oil.
“It may happen … I can’t tell you yet,” Trump said. “We did it with India. We’re doing it probably with a couple of others. One of them could be China.” Trump made the remarks after saying that he expected to announce more secondary sanctions aimed at pressuring Russia to end its war in Ukraine.
Earlier in the day, Trump cited India’s continued imports of Russian oil as the reason for imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, on top of a previous 25 per cent duty.
The latest White House order did not mention China, another major buyer of Russian oil. However, the warning follows remarks last week from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who cautioned that Beijing could also face tariffs if it continues energy trade with Moscow.
