South China Morning Post publisher Tammy Tam appointed to Law Reform Commission

The publisher of the South China Morning Post, Tammy Tam, has been appointed to Hong Kong’s Law Reform Commission as the representative for the media industry for a three-year term starting in March.

Tam succeeded May Chan Suk-mei, a news director at Commercial Radio, who completed two three-year terms, with Secretary for Justice Paul Lam Ting-kwok, thanking Chan for her valuable contributions and insights.

The appointment by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu was announced on Friday by the commission, which advises the government on legal reforms to keep Hong Kong’s laws up to date and responsive to societal needs.

“The [commission] believes that Ms Tam’s rich experience in journalism will certainly assist the [commission] in expanding its reach in the community,” the body said.

The 12-member commission, chaired by Lam, includes the chief justice of the Court of Final Appeal and the law draftsman as ex officio members, as well as legal professionals, scholars and a media representative, among others.

Lee also reappointed Professor Alexander Loke from the School of Law at City University for a second three-year term beginning March 1.
