Germany crashed out of the FIFA World Cup after a fiery game against Paraguay, and even though the game was riddled with questionable referee choices and decisions, it’s not hard to admit that the team didn’t really play its best. It looks like some of the players were disappointed in the squad too, and said some things after the game.
According to reports from Sport Bild, captured by @iMiaSanMia, Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger told his Germany teammates in the dressing room immediately after their Round of 32 loss that he intended to retire from international football. Whether this was a post-disappointment hasty decision or a final choice made after a disastrous game, Rüdiger might have actually meant it.
However, following Julian Nagelsmann’s departure and the high-profile appointment of Jürgen Klopp as Germany’s head coach, Rüdiger has paused his decision and left the door open to continuing his international career. The 33-year-old, who has earned 86 caps for Germany since his debut in 2014, is reportedly waiting to discuss his role within Klopp’s upcoming squad overhaul before making a final decision.
