Pret a Manger ups its salad game as healthy eating QSR sector blossoms

Called Super Plates, the new salad range, which launches tomorrow (9 July), is said to offer bigger, more nutrient-packed salads in four flavours: Chipotle Chicken, Butternut Mezze, Miso Salmon and Shawarma Chicken.

The new salads are nearly 60% bigger than Pret’s existing salad range, weigh around 450g and are high in protein, in keeping with the current health trend for more protein rich foods. They feature nine new premium ingredients and have been created by the sandwich and coffee chain’s in-house head of food and registered nutritionist Anna Tebbs and will be made in Pret’s kitchens by team members daily.

The move puts Pret on a more competitive food in the burgeoning salad sector againstg competitors such as The Salad Project, Atis, and Farmer J.

The Chipotle Chicken variant has 49g of protein and features chicken breast coated in chipotle with a black bean mole sauce, brown rice, quinoa, red pepper and avocado while the The Miso Salmon meal has 36g of protein and includes salmon, togarashi seeds, avocado, black rice, quinoa, broccoli and edamame soya beans. The Shawarma Chicken has 49g of protein, and features chicken breast in a shawarma spiced sauce, chickpeas, kale, red pepper and cucumber sticks.

“Carefully created for customers who are after more substantial on-the-go options, these four new plates are bigger, bolder and more balanced,” says Tebbs.

“They have been designed to have delicious bursts of flavour in every bite and the four new Super Plates offer something for everyone.”

Pret’s new salad range comes at a time of activity in the healthy eating food-to-go category. London-based The Salad Project recently announced it will open four new venues this summer and had launched a partnership with Indian restaurant group Dishoom.

Salad concept Atis also continues to expand and last month launched its own restaurant collaboration, a limited-edition Wahaca x Atis plate in partnership with the Mexican restaurant group. The salad bowl brand opened its tenth site earlier this year and says further expansion is on the cards.

Salad-focused brand PICK.YOUR.OWN made its debut at the end of last year with a site on London’s Fenchurch Street and Farmer J, which has a strong salad focus, says its expects to operate more than 20 sites by the end of the year.

Pret’s Super Plates range will be available at over 250 of its sites across the country.
