An expansion scheme approved for a south Pembrokeshire holiday site of nearly 500 ‘caravan’ units near Tenby will help safeguard the jobs of the more than 120 people employed there, planners have heard.
In an application recommended for approval at the September meeting of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority’s development management committee, Haven Leisure Limited sought permission for the installation of 12 ‘caravan’ holiday accommodation bases and decking, with associated works at Lydstep Beach Village, Lydstep Haven.
The scheme was for committee consideration as it was recommended for approval despite conflicting with the local development plan and both local community councils Manorbier and Penally objecting.
An officer report for members stated: “Planning permission is sought for the installation of 12 bases for the siting of holiday accommodation units (falling within the definition of a caravan), together with associated decking, internal access roads, parking, landscaping and drainage infrastructure.

“11 units are proposed within the South of Pine Tree area and one unit within the North of Haven Crest area. The proposal represents a modest infill development within the existing operational holiday park and does not extend the established site boundary into the surrounding countryside.”
Detailing the site itself, it said: “Lydstep Beach Village is an established holiday park located on the southern coast of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park at Lydstep Haven, approximately three kilometres southwest of Tenby.
“The site occupies a prominent coastal location overlooking Lydstep Bay and has operated as a holiday park for several decades. It currently comprises approximately 471 holiday accommodation pitches, together with associated internal estate roads, parking areas, reception facilities, leisure buildings, landscaping and open amenity areas. The park is accessed from the A4139 via an existing priority junction.
“The application relates to two separate infill parcels within the existing operational holiday park. The larger area, known as South of Pine Tree, is located towards the northern extent of the site and currently comprises open grassed amenity space situated between existing holiday accommodation, mature woodland edge and internal estate roads.

“The second area, known as North of Haven Crest, is located within the southern section of the park close to the coastline and consists of a small area of open land adjacent to existing holiday accommodation and internal access roads.”
It said the extra 12 units would increase the site size from 471 units to 483, an increase “of approximately 2.55 per cent in the overall number of holiday accommodation units at the park”.
Speaking at the meeting agent Helen Ashby-Ridgway of Lichfields described the changes, which would not see an increase in the actual size of the site, as “modest,” adding the additional units would help support the jobs of the existing 123 people employed on site.
The application was approved, with a long string of conditions by committee members, with one abstention.
