Up-and-coming Hong Kong tennis player Yandy Shek Cheuk-ying clinched her first title as a professional in her home city’s annual tournament as she and other top competitors helped raise money for charity.
Shek was one of more than 1,700 entrants in the 77th edition of the CRC Open, which ended last month after five weeks of competition at the Chinese Recreation Club, Hong Kong (CRCHK) in Tai Hang, near Causeway Bay.
Players once again helped raise money for the community by hitting aces during the tournament, with CRCHK promising to donate HK$250 (US$32) for each one served during main-draw matches officiated by a chair umpire.
The club said the sum raised from more than 80 aces helped the tournament’s total donation reach HK$45,750 (US$5,875).
The funds are being shared equally between its two charity partners: Operation Santa Claus (OSC), an annual fundraising initiative organised jointly by the Post and public broadcaster RTHK, and another local NGO Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon, which provides medical services to the public.
Shek, 20, was crowned ladies’ singles champion following a commanding 6-0, 6-2 victory in the final, while Argentinian Raul Guardia beat Hong Kong’s Walter Tam 6-4, 6-4 to claim the men’s singles title.
