More signs being installed in new section of Hong Kong’s Central Kowloon Bypass

Hong Kong’s transport authorities are putting up more signs on the Yau Ma Tei section of the Central Kowloon Bypass to make directions clearer, following complaints of inadequate signage despite the newly opened thoroughfare operating smoothly on its first day.

Secretary for Transport Mable Chan said that 50,000 vehicles had so far used the bypass’ new section since its launch the day before, as she conducted an inspection on Monday morning.

“We can see that the traffic at Gascoigne Road Flyover, Lung Cheung Road [and other] main trunk roads in Kowloon witnessed a marked improvement [on Monday], with conditions being remarkably smooth,” Chan said.

She noted that some schools had already started their year-end holiday and pledged to closely monitor the traffic situation when the new term resumed and traffic picked up.

The long-awaited Yau Ma Tei section of Hong Kong’s Central Kowloon Bypass opened on Sunday, with eight bus routes – including three new ones – starting operations on Monday, cutting peak-hour travel time between West and East Kowloon from 30 minutes to just five.

The new 4.7km (2.9-mile) two-way transport corridor includes a 3.9km-long three-way tunnel linking the Kai Tak Development Area and Kowloon Bay with Yau Ma Tei.
